When your funding round meets Dutch immigration reality

What every scaling company in the Netherlands discovers too late about hiring international talent.

You hired the right person. Now get them in, legally. HumanR opens the door: IND sponsorship, highly skilled migrant visa, 30% ruling, partner permits, BSN registration, payroll compliance, labour contracts.

The moment the funding lands

Congratulations. You just closed your Series A or B.

The Netherlands has produced some of Europe's most exciting startups and scaleups in the past decade. Fresh funding rounds, ambitious roadmaps, investor confidence. But the moment that capital lands in the account, every founder faces the same immediate reality: you need to build your team fast. Not next quarter. Now.

The growth targets are set. The board expects execution. And the clock is running.

The talent problem nobody planned for

The talent you need, the senior engineers, the AI specialists, the product architects, the data scientists, does not exist in sufficient numbers in the Netherlands. Or in the EU, for that matter. The local market was already tight before you started hiring, and the competition for the same profiles is fierce.

So you look further. India. South Africa. Brazil. Canada. The US. You find exactly the right person. They are experienced, available, and ready to relocate.

Then Dutch reality walks into the room.

What the IND actually requires

To hire a non-EU national into the Netherlands, your company needs to be a recognised IND sponsor. Not working towards it. Not we have submitted the paperwork. Officially recognised.

That process requires time, documentation, administrative rigour, and a demonstrably clean compliance track record. If you have never done it before, it is emphatically not a weekend project. Many companies underestimate it significantly, and discover that gap at the worst possible moment.

Then there are the salary thresholds. The highly skilled migrant scheme has strict minimum salary thresholds, currently ranging from €4,357 to €5,942 gross per month depending on age. These are non-negotiable floors set by the IND. Miscalculate, misclassify, or miss a threshold review, and you are in breach of your sponsor obligations. At which point the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) becomes considerably less friendly, and your hire's right to remain in the country becomes considerably less certain.

And that is just the paperwork before they land.

What happens in week one

Your new hire arrives. They have a hundred questions you had not anticipated. All of them reasonable. All of them urgent.

Why is my net salary so much lower than what we agreed gross? What exactly is loonheffing and why does it feel personal? Can my partner come to the Netherlands, and can they work here? I heard about a 30% tax ruling, am I eligible, how do I apply, and do I need an expensive tax consultant? Do I need a Dutch bank account before I can receive my salary, and how do I open one without a BSN, and how do I get a BSN without a registered address, and how do I get a registered address without...

You get the idea.

Meanwhile, your HR lead, talented, well-meaning, genuinely trying, is somewhere between the fourth IND FAQ page and a LinkedIn post from 2019 that may or may not still be accurate, drafting a contract that may or may not be compliant with Dutch labour law, while your new hire asks about school options for their children and whether their driving licence is valid here.

What it actually costs when it goes wrong

This is not a failure of ambition or preparation. This is what happens when fast-moving, well-funded businesses meet one of Europe's most structured compliance environments without a guide.

And the cost of getting it wrong is real. Sponsor status can be suspended. Permits can be revoked. Employees have to leave the country. Audits arrive without much warning and with considerable paperwork. The IND is thorough in a way that respects no funding round and no investor timeline.

Beyond the legal exposure, there is the human cost. A senior hire who relocates their family, uproots their life, and then finds themselves in an unresolvable compliance situation is not a recoverable situation. Not for them, and not for the company.

What experienced companies do differently

The smartest founders we work with figured out one thing early: this complexity does not disappear by hoping it will. It disappears by working with someone who has navigated it hundreds of times, knows exactly where the edges are, and can move quickly without cutting corners.

For 19 years, we have been the operational partner that ambitious companies call when this moment arrives, ideally before the chaos, occasionally during it.

We are a fully recognised IND sponsor, which means your new hire can be processed under our sponsorship immediately. No waiting for your own recognition. No compliance exposure. No scrambling. We handle the highly skilled migrant permit, the Dutch payroll, the employment contract, the 30% ruling application, the partner's residence and work authorisation, and the steady stream of entirely reasonable questions that arrive in week one, week two, and occasionally at 11pm on a Thursday.

We are SNA certified to the NEN 4400 standard, independently audited and verifiably compliant. Not a claim. A certification.

The Netherlands is worth it. The complexity is manageable.

The Netherlands is a genuinely exceptional place to build a global company. The ecosystem, the infrastructure, the international connectivity, it is real and it is valuable. The highly skilled migrant scheme exists precisely because the Dutch government understands that global talent is essential to keeping the country competitive.

But the compliance layer is dense, detailed, and entirely unimpressed by your last valuation.

The companies that scale their international teams successfully here are not the ones who figured out Dutch immigration law themselves. They are the ones who found the right partner early and got on with building their business. That is the only kind of help worth having.
